Fifth session of the Meeting of the Parties (MOP) to the Aarhus Convention was held in Maastricht, the Netherlands

The delegation headed by Deputy Minister of Nature Protection Khachik Hakobyan participated in the fifth session of the Meeting of the Parties (MOP 5) to the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Convention on Access to Information, Public Participation in Decision-making and Access to Justice in Environmental Matters (Aarhus Convention), the second Meeting of the Parties to the Protocol (MOPP 2) on Pollutant Release and Transfer Registers (PRTRs), and their joint high-level segment convened in Maastricht, the Netherlands, from July 1-3, 2014.

During the meeting the Maastricht Declaration was adopted, with the statements addressing their views on the Aarhus Convention and the Protocol on PRTRs and implementation of these strategies in the next four years.

A number of decisions were adopted on the high-level segment which have been developed for fifth session of the Meeting of the Parties (MOP 5) to the Aarhus Convention. Including draftdecision on implementation V/9a obligations imposed on Armenia by the Aarhus Convention. Similar documents were also adopted for the 9 other countries (Austria, Belarus, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Germany, Kazakhstan, Spain, Romania, Ukraine, Turkmenistan, United Kingdom).

During the meeting deputy Minister of Nature Protection Khachik Hakobyan representingthe implementation process of the Convention’s requirements, said that on July 21, 2014 the National Assembly of Republic of Armenia adopted the Law of the Republic of Armenia “On Environmental Impact Assessment and Expertise”. Taking into account that fact it was agreed with the Secretariat of the Convention that Armenia will soon provide information on that law and its ongoing work arising from its subordinate acts.

Deputy Minister of Nature Protection Khachik Hakobyan met also with Wilma Mansveld, Minister for the Environment, Andrew Mokhnik, the Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Ukraine, Mayor of Maastricht and head of OSCE offices in Vienna. The ways of further cooperation were outlined during the meeting.
