The public organization united 60 fish farms applied to the Minister of Nature Protection to hold a meeting for the discussion of the issues disturbing the business entities operating in this field.

Stating the problem of decreased groundwater level in Ararat Valley, Minister of Nature Protection Aramayis Grigoryan informed that the Armenian Government has taken projected actions to solve that problem, but he would like to listen to fish farmers’ approaches to solve the problems and get their support, as the government can’t solve the problems alone. “This meeting is important for all of us, as we need to urgently save water in the region. The problem is so urgent that the government had made a decision to take decisive actions. When taking measures we have also taken into consideration the interests of fish farmers. We should be able to reduce the amount of used water, for avoiding irreparable losses” the Minister outlined.

Chairman of “Union of Armenian Fish Farmers” NGO Armen Buniatyan thanked for the meeting and presented the concerns of fish farmers regarding the problem of decreasing groundwater level in Ararat Valley, which threatens the prospects for fish breeding for a long time. He is concerned with the fact that some fish farmers take more water than they need to produce that particular amount of fish.

The Minister of Nature Protection informed that they have developed an appropriate project, which will enable reducing volumes of used water in fish farming. These works should be organized so as not to damage fish farming. The Minister advised the fish farmers to invest new technologies in their farms, which will both allow not only to minimize the volume of water required for the production of fish, but also to stimulate the development of the farms. According to the Minister theseworks will be done parallel with the closure of illegal wells. Aramayis Grigoryan stressed, that at this stage of works a special attention should be paid to the conservation and liquidation of self-propelled wells in order to get results from the carried out works.

Fish farmers expressed their willingness to support with all the capacities to the Ministry of Nature Protection in solving the problem of artesian basin in Ararat Valley, as they realize that for long-term fish farming it is necessary to use groundwater resources effectively.
