The Second Session of Intergovernmental Ecological Council of the CIS member states


Deputy Minister of Nature Protection Khachik Hakobyan participated in the Second Session of Intergovernmental Ecological Council of the CIS member states (September 14-16, 2015) in Astana, the capital of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Representatives of CIS member states made reports, discussed information issues/negotiation analysis/ concerning the collaboration of CIS member states, drafts of signed agreements and perspectives of cooperation.

Deputy Minister of Nature Protection Khachik Hakobyan greeted the participants attaching significance to the necessity of joint initiatives in environmental problems and biodiversity preservation referring to the experience of Armenia in this sphere. Khachik Hakobyan made reports over “Experience exchange between CIS member states in biodiversity and atmosphere protection policy” and “Designing Red Book of CIS member states”. Deputy Minister of Nature Protection noted: “The Republic of Armenia as a subject of international law, ratifying the Convention on “Biodiversity” in 1993 and signing a number of agreements, has undertaken responsibilities the realization of the latter fosters environmental protection and effective conservation of biodiversity. Armenia is situated in the crossroads of 3 geographical regions. There grows 8850 species of flora 127 of which are endemic and 17523 species of fauna. In 1999 according to the convention issues and objectives “The RA biodiversity preservation plan and strategy” was developed and passed. Afterwards, the legal base of the field has significantly improved, international collaboration has become more active and a number of international projects were realized. In 2014 Armenia initiated the development of the RA biodiversity preservation project and strategy in 2016-2020 which is already in the final phase; later on it will be approved by the GoA”.

At the session Intergovernmental Ecological Council Secretariat addressed to the steps undertaken towards the accomplishment of arrangements considered at the 1st session; 2015-2017 working plan was presented and discussed. The meeting ended in signing the Protocol.
