An event dedicated to International Day for Biological Diversity took place in State Museum of Nature of Armenia

Due to the joint efforts of the RA Ministry of Nature Protection and WWF an event dedicated to International Day for Biological Diversity took place in State Museum of Nature of Armenia.

Minister of Nature Protection Aramayis Grigroyan, WWF Armenia Director Karen Manvelyan, members of NGOs and scientific councils as well as journalists participated in the event.

Minister Aramayis Grigroyan greeting the guests and emphasizing the importance of the day, particularly noted: “Viable ecosystems and sustainable biodiversity are the most essential foundations for the existence of humanity which underpins livelihoods and economic growth. Biodiversity management must be deliberate; negative impact on environment should be minimal with the objective of social-economic sphere improvement. The United Nations opened the Convention on Biological Diversity on June 5, 1992 for signing and adopted in 1993 to stress the urgency of biodiversity protection. The latter was ratified by more than 168 countries and the Republic of Armenia among them. The main problems of biodiversity preservation are in the national and state priorities. International environmental founds support us to preserve the exceptionally rich biodiversity. Due to the joint efforts we have numerous achievements; however there is a lot to do. Today we have gathered here to discuss outputs of the completed works, future undertakings, achievements, shortcomings, concerns; to hear new suggestions, positive criticism so that we will reveal the gaps of the sector, discuss future tasks and problems”.

WWF Armenia Director Karen Manvelyan in his turn stressing the importance of the day and appreciating activities implemented by the joint efforts directed to biodiversity protection presented “Responsible Caucasus” film over perspectives of specially protected nature areas in Armenia and ecotourism development.

Division of Environment Protection Policy Head, National Coordinator of Convention on Biological Diversity Gagik Manucharyan highlighted the activities carried out to conserve the rich biodiversity in Armenia and coming programs.

The attendees viewed “Biodiversity of Armenia” exhibition after the discussion.
