The Third Extraordinary Meeting of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol on “Substances Depleting the Ozone Layer” took place in Vienna

On July 22-23 the Third Extraordinary Meeting of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol on “Substances Depleting the Ozone Layer” took place proceeded by the 37th and 38th Meetings of the Open-Ended Working Group in order to hold international negotiations on the phasedown of climate change inducing hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs).

At the meeting a number of round table discussions were organized to lay the basis for adoption of the next amendment to Montreal Protocol in 2016; the latter will enable to use constructive mechanisms towards ozone layer recovery eliminating HFCs.

The Republic of Armenia participated in the Extraordinary Meeting; Khachik Hakobyan, Deputy Minister of Nature Protection and Lianna Ghambaryan, National Coordinator of Ozone Center of the RA Ministry of Nature Protection.

Kh. Hakobyan had meetings with UNIDO, UNDP and UNEP delegations; ongoing and future sector projects in collaboration with Armenia were discussed.

Greeting the meeting participants and attaching significance to joint efforts directed to ease negative impact of climate changes, U.S Secretary of States John Kerry particularly stated in his speech: “Amending the Montreal Protocol to phase down HFCs, we will be able to take one of the most important unitary steps to stave off the worst impacts of climate change and to protect the future for people living in each corner of the planet”.

The Armenian side, agreeing on the aforementioned ideas, emphasized, that people can and should take care of the planet, where they live.
