Cooperation of the government, mining companies and civil society will promote transparency in the mining sector


A consultation on “Challenges and Concerns of Accountable and Transparent Management in the Mining Sector” took place in “Media Center”; RA Deputy Minister of Nature Protection, EITI MSG Member Khachik Hakobyan, Armen Stepanyan, Senior Manager Sustainability at “Lydian Armenia” CJSC and Chairman of “Environmental Law” NGO Arthur Grigoryan were engaged in.

Notifying, that the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative Board approved Armenia’s EITI candidature application at the EITI board meeting held in Bogota, Colombia, on March 9, 2017 and Armenia attained the EITI candidacy status, RA Deputy Minister set a great store on extractive sector transparency, especially focusing on the maintenance of environmental norms.

Kh. Hakobyan emphasized, that prior to joining the EITI, Chief of Staff-Minister Davit Harutyunyan coordinated preparatory measures, whereas forming the Multi-Stakeholder Group (MSG) is considered essential. Kh. Hakobyan attributed the importance to the demand of increasing accountability to citizens in the mining sector and stated that the round table format at “Media Centre”, where officers of the government, mining companies and NGOs gathered, ensures effective solutions of the issues.

MSG Member Armen Stepanyan noted, that executives of mining companies are without doubt interested in extractive sector transparency, which will enable equalizing the rules among the organizations. Besides, “Lydian Armenia” CJSC Representative stressed the fact of being guided by the principle of transparency.

MSG Member Arthur Grigoryan referred to legal norms and mechanisms enhancing public participation.

The meeting attendees agreed, that the platform created for the government, companies and civil society will encourage to hold a dialogue on tackling problems in the extractive industries and by dint of EITI a huge amount of relevant data and useful information will be available to all beneficiaries.
