RA Minister of Nature Protection Artsvik Minasyan received Caucasus Nature Fund (CNF) Executive Director George (Geof) Giacomini and RA National Coordinator Arman Vermishyan.
The meeting was also attended by First Deputy Minister of Nature Protection Erik Grigoryan, Chief of Staff Hovhannes Hovhannisyan, other officials and heads of subdivisions.
Extending a vote of thanks to the guests, Artsvik Minasyan briefed that during the Cabinet sitting the Government of the Republic of Armenia adopted the draft decree on “Approving the concept of forestry reforms, strategy and the list of a plan of actions”; the draft entrusted the Ministry of Nature Protection of the Republic of Armenia with the implementation of the policy in forestry sector.
The Minister of Nature Protection attributed importance to bolstering the partnership along with CNF, under the mandate of which is the support to specially protected areas of nature (SPAs), emphasizing that there are 13 specially protected areas of nature within the forests under “Hayantar” (ArmForest) SNCO to be included in the Ministry of Nature Protection of the Republic of Armenia and their capacity building is also a top-priority issue.
The parties considered the statue of jointly accomplished projects, achieved outcomes in 2017 as well as the total amount of financing provided by the RA Government for the management of SPAs and main courses of grant allocations envisaged for it by the Caucasus Nature Fund.
RA Ministry of Nature Protection Artsvik Minasyan, setting a great store on full implementation of the policy conducted in specially protected areas of nature, and enhancing of grant usage allocated by the fund with the objective to carry out their capacity building, prioritized the fulfillment of an integrated approach to all SPAs, thus proposing to review the framework agreement with CNF, that was approved by George (Geof) Giacomini. The parties came to terms about taking practical steps towards it in a short period of time.
At the request of Caucasus Nature Fund Executive Director, Artsvik Minasyan presented the progress of measures assumed to detect and prevent the cases on deforestation, by proposing to consider the possibility of attracting other funds for the acquisition of safety equipment apart from grant resources projected for current expenses of SPAs by the Fund.
In the context of an unprecedented number of wildfires recorded in 2017, the parties also discussed the issues concerning the provision of SPAs with necessary firefighting equipment next month.
At the suggestion of Minister Artsvik Minasyan, Caucasus Nature Fund Executive Director George (Geof) Giacomini also had a consultation with First Deputy Minister of Nature Protection Erik Grigoryan over separate issues.
