In the frames of “Support Program for Protected Areas-Armenia” (SPPA-A) project, with the support of the Ministry of Environment-coordinated small grants component (SGC), “New Planet” environmental NGO implemented a project of upgrading the heating system of the secondary school of the city of Agarak, Syunik region, with the installation of advanced solar photovoltaic (PV)  heating systems.
Prior to the project fulfillment, the heating system of the school having 672 pupils, functioned with non-energy efficient electric heaters, the quantity of which was also limited. In the period of winter, it was possible to reduce the huge consumption of electricity by introducing a new heating system, which saved considerable resources.
The roof of the school was fixed. A completely new land contour has been conducted.
There were installed 68 solar photovoltaic panels on the roof of the only school of the city. All classrooms are equipped with heaters (120 heaters and 40 regulators). Currently the school is heated by a smart system, excluding the human factor. Since the end of the project, the school has not paid for electricity consumption for September, October and November. The annual saving comprises over 1.800.000 AMD.
Instead of the previous 14 ° C, 21-22 ° C warm is provided in all classrooms in the winter months.
The school has been equipped with physics laboratory stand, which enables schoolchildren to see the entire process of renewable electricity generation.
The solar power plant can be connected to the online monitoring system to monitor the size and efficiency of the power produced by the plant.
