The elaborated order of experimental industrial fish hunting of whitefish in Lake Sevan will be embarked upon in the near future.
Chaired by Minister of Environment Romanos Petrosyan, due to discussions with scientific and professional groups, a wide range of stakeholders, a number of departments and beneficiaries of the draft in recent weeks, it was adopted a decree, by proposing to make amendments to the experimental industrial fish hunting of whitefish in Lake Sevan.
Attributing importance to the state exceptional interest and the fact that the lake, remarkably in Gegharkunik region, is a significant socio-economic factor, the above-mentioned amendments were submitted to the Government by Minister Petrosyan and approved by the Government.
According to the supplements made in the draft:
-As a result of the conclusion given by the National Academy of Sciences, from now on industrial fish hunting will be allowed to be done in the area of Small Sevan.
-The 8 will be added to the 17 previously approved districts. 25 districts will totally be operating throughout Lake Sevan, monitored by “ Sevan” national park,
-It has been permitted to catch whitefish weighing at least 400 grams instead of the previous 500 grams,
The problem of fishers entering the lake through the areas nearby their settlements will be tackled,
The maximum quantity of 200 tons of industrial fish hunting of whitefish in Lake Sevan has been revised,
The new quantity will be 300 tons, approved by the draft.
Those fishermen who have not taken the initiative to apply to “Sevan” national park to participate in the experimental industrial fish hunting project and to sign a contract with the Ministry of Environment will have the opportunity:
to submit applications for industrial fish hunting to ''Sevan'' national park SNCO from September 3, within 10 days,
to sign contracts with the Ministry of Environment, after their approval, within the defined period of time,
to participate in the further experimental industrial fish hunting project to be embarked upon in Lake Sevan, in case of contracts signed by the defined order of the law,
The deadline for the experimental fishing season is November 30, inclusive.

From the moment the order is embarked upon, each citizen entering Lake Sevan for industrial fish hunting without having a contract with the Ministry of Environment will be charged an administrative fine.
The caught fish will be confiscated by the defined order of the law.
Note, that for the first time since 2004, the order of supervising industrial fish hunting of whitefish in Lake Sevan will be implemented by force of law. The project is aimed at fulfilling efficient and controllable management of the lake's fish stocks, to develop a culture of streamlined fishing of state-owned fish stocks of Lake Sevan, and ultimately to rehabilitate and restore violated ecosystem of Lake Sevan by dint of comprehensive actions and measures.
Additionally, the experimental industrial fish hunting of whitefish in Lake Sevan will be controlled and supervised by the RA Police, the RA Inspectorate for Nature Protection and Mineral Resources, by the newly formed special guard unit (conducting coastal and water twenty-four-hour duty) of ''Sevan'' NP SNCO of the Ministry of Environment
Previously it was established:
- to allow exclusively 200 tons of industrial fish hunting of whitefish,
- to enter the lake for fishing from only 17 control districts,
- to catch fish not less than 500 grams,
- to ban industrial fish hunting in the area of Small Sevan
- to define the fishing season by October 31, inclusive.
