Combating forest pests and diseases - a top priority

Minister of Environment Romanos Petrosyan held a working consultation on forest protection and preservation. In attendance were Deputy Minister A. Mazmanyan, Acting Chairman of the Committee of Forest A. Petrosyan, Director of "ArmForest" SNCO P. Tsugunyan, Acting Head of Forest Policy Department I. Zargaryan Head of Strategic Policy Department L. Avetisyan of the Ministry of Environment. The number one task discussed at the meeting was to prepare for and combat pests and diseases. Due to certain circumstances, there is a great deal of work in that sphere for 2021.
As a result of spring forest-pathological researches, the area infected with leaf-eating pests and diseases is about 11,575 ha by the regions (according to 2019 data - 5400 ha, according to 2020 data - 6100 ha). The main task is to be ready to perform a systematic fight against diseases and pests, thus preventing the spread and deforestation in early spring this year. The possibilities of pooling and using the capacities and technical capabilities of other state agencies for this purpose were discussed.
The Minister issued special instructions to reveal the capacities of other state administration bodies and agencies, to find ways to pool them, to accomplish that volume of work via the relevant subdivisions of the Committee of Forest and "ArmForest" SNCO. Instructions were given to consider the issue of identifying and mapping possible new areas infected with pests and diseases, so that the same processes could be realized in those areas as well. The process of establishing and operating the Forest Code-defined supervision institutes within the Committee of Forest of the MoE in the shortest possible time was considered.
