Population
Demographic Statistics
Permanent population of Yerevan as of April 1, 2001, was 1 246 700 (33% of the Republics total). The Actual available population of Yerevan is considerably less, because of emigration. There are no data on the population, because emigrants have not been registered. Part of the emigrants have been registered based on the differences in the air passenger lists from arriving and departing planes.
The main focus is the population census in Armenia (including Yerevan), adopted by the Parliament in October 1999.
The
population census in Armenia will take place from the 10th
to 19th of October 2001. Bilateral contacts were
established between the institutes of Cartography of Armenia and
Northern Ireland and the National Statistical Service of the
Republic of Armenia (NSS) to prepare
enumerator maps. The biggest
problem consists of obtaining the necessary funding for the
census.
Main
objective would be a feasibility study about and a concept for
the establishment of a population database based on the census
data and development of a system of updating population data.
After the 1988 Spitak Earthquake, a population census was conducted in the period from the 12th to 19th of January 1989. During the economic crisis in the 1990ies, a lot of people left the country and the conflict with the neighbouring country was also a reason for migration. Therefore, the NSS lost the overview on migration processes. Hence, surveys were organized on migration statistics in 1998-1999 as a first attempt to obtain data on migration.
A pilot survey at the border points and the airport was conducted as well as a pilot migration survey on households. According to the survey results two third of departures and arrivals from/to Armenia are done by Armenian citizens. Interesting information was received on social and everyday life and labour conditions, material wellfare of previous and present emigrants.
The results were very helpful for the assessment of the migration flow inside and outside the country. Moreover, the total number of population was adjusted accordingly. Results were also used to receive more accurate description of both the demographic and social-economic situation of the country and initiate scientific discussions on methods for population projection.
Now a new state organisation responsible for migration and refugees in Armenia has been established. The NSS management intends to organize a standard migration survey for the next two to three years based on the pilot surveys. One week within each quarter of the year should be surveyed.
